What Is Technical SEO?
Technical SEO is everything under the hood of your website that affects how search engines interact with it. While on-page SEO focuses on content and HTML elements visitors can see, technical SEO focuses on the infrastructure that search engine crawlers depend on.
Think of your website like a house. On-page SEO is the paint, furniture, and layout that visitors experience. Technical SEO is the foundation, plumbing, and electrical work. If the foundation is cracked, it does not matter how nice the furniture looks. Similarly, if Google cannot crawl your site efficiently, cannot index your pages, or penalizes you for slow load times, your content quality becomes irrelevant.

Site Speed: Why Every Second Costs You Customers
Google has made site speed a ranking factor since 2010, and its importance has only grown. Pages that load in under 2 seconds have significantly lower bounce rates and higher conversion rates than pages that take 4 or 5 seconds. Every additional second of load time increases bounce rate by roughly 32%.
For local businesses, this matters even more. Most local searches happen on mobile devices over cellular connections. A site built with a heavy WordPress theme loaded with plugins might take 6 to 8 seconds to load on a phone. That is enough for most visitors to hit the back button and try the next result.

Core Web Vitals: Google's User Experience Metrics
Core Web Vitals are three specific metrics Google uses to measure user experience on your website. They are a confirmed ranking factor, and Google displays them in Search Console for every site it tracks.
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measures how long it takes for the main content of a page to load. Google wants this under 2.5 seconds. If your hero image or main text block takes longer than that to appear, LCP is failing. Common fixes include optimizing images, improving server response time, and removing render-blocking resources.
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) measures visual stability. Have you ever tried to click a button on a website, but the page shifted and you clicked something else? That is a layout shift. Google wants a CLS score under 0.1. Common causes include images without defined dimensions, ads loading after page content, and fonts that swap sizes after loading.
Interaction to Next Paint (INP) measures responsiveness. When a user clicks a button or taps a link, how quickly does the page respond? Google wants INP under 200 milliseconds. Heavy JavaScript, long-running tasks, and unoptimized event handlers are the usual culprits.

Crawlability and Indexation: Getting Found by Google
Before Google can rank your pages, it needs to discover them (crawl) and add them to its database (index). If either step fails, your page is invisible to search no matter how good the content is.
Crawlability issues include broken internal links, orphan pages (pages with no links pointing to them), redirect chains (multiple redirects in a row that slow down crawling), robots.txt misconfiguration blocking important pages, and server errors that prevent Googlebot from accessing your site.
Indexation issues include noindex tags accidentally left on pages, duplicate content confusing Google about which version to index, thin content pages that Google considers not worth indexing, and canonical tag errors pointing to the wrong URL.
We use Google Search Console and Screaming Frog to audit crawlability and indexation for every client. We check which pages are indexed, which are excluded and why, and whether Google is encountering any errors. We also submit and monitor XML sitemaps to ensure Google has a complete roadmap of your site.
One common issue we find with local business sites: pages that exist but are not linked from anywhere else on the site. Google may never find these orphan pages unless they are in the sitemap. We identify and fix these structural gaps as part of our technical audit.
Schema Markup: Speaking Google's Language
Schema markup (also called structured data) is code you add to your website that tells Google exactly what your content means. Instead of letting Google guess that a chunk of text is your business address, schema explicitly labels it as a PostalAddress with city, state, and zip code.
For local businesses, the most important schema types are LocalBusiness (your name, address, phone, hours, and service area), Service (what you offer and pricing), FAQ (common questions and answers), and Review (customer ratings). Properly implemented schema can earn you rich snippets in search results: star ratings, price ranges, FAQ dropdowns, and other enhanced features that increase visibility and click-through rates.
We implement JSON-LD structured data on every page we build or optimize. This is the format Google recommends, and it is cleaner and easier to maintain than older microdata formats. We validate all schema using Google's Rich Results Test and Schema.org validators to ensure there are no errors.
Schema markup does not directly boost rankings (Google has said as much), but it significantly improves how your listing appears in search results. A result with star ratings, pricing, and FAQ sections takes up more space and gets more clicks than a plain blue link. More clicks signal to Google that your result is valuable, which indirectly improves rankings over time.
XML Sitemaps, HTTPS, and the Rest
XML sitemaps are files that list every page on your website for Google to discover. They are especially important for larger sites or sites with pages that are not well-linked internally. We generate accurate XML sitemaps, submit them to Google Search Console, and update them automatically as new pages are added.
HTTPS has been a confirmed ranking signal since 2014. If your site still runs on HTTP without an SSL certificate, you are losing rankings and scaring away customers who see the "Not Secure" warning in their browser. Every site we build and manage includes SSL/HTTPS by default.
Canonical tags tell Google which version of a page is the "official" one. This matters when you have similar pages or when the same content is accessible at multiple URLs (with or without www, with or without trailing slashes). Incorrect canonical tags can cause Google to index the wrong version of your pages or ignore important pages entirely.
Redirect management ensures that old URLs properly redirect to new ones. Broken redirects (404 errors) lose link equity and frustrate users. Redirect chains (A redirects to B, which redirects to C) slow down crawling and dilute authority. We audit and clean up redirects as part of every technical engagement.
