If SEO is the overall strategy for getting your website found on Google, technical SEO is the infrastructure that makes it possible. It covers everything about how your website is built and served that affects search engine crawling, indexing, and ranking.
Think of it like a restaurant. Your content is the food. Your on-page SEO is the menu and presentation. Technical SEO is the kitchen, the plumbing, the electrical, and the health inspection. Customers don't see it, but without it, nothing works.

What "fast" means in 2026: Your main content should load within 2.5 seconds (Largest Contentful Paint). Your page should respond to a user's first interaction within 200 milliseconds (Interaction to Next Paint). And your layout shouldn't jump around while the page loads (Cumulative Layout Shift below 0.1).
Common speed killers: Unoptimized images (a single uncompressed photo can be 3-5MB), excessive JavaScript from page builders like WordPress with heavy plugins, render-blocking CSS files, too many third-party scripts (analytics, chat widgets, social embeds), and cheap shared hosting that can't handle traffic spikes.
How to check: Go to pagespeed.web.dev and enter your URL. Google will tell you exactly what's slowing your site down and how much each issue impacts performance. Focus on the biggest opportunities first. Often, optimizing images and removing unused JavaScript can cut load times in half.
Crawlability and Indexation: Can Google Find Your Pages?
Before Google can rank your pages, it needs to find them (crawl) and add them to its database (index). If your pages aren't being crawled or indexed, they literally don't exist in Google's eyes, no matter how good the content is.
Crawlability is about making it easy for Google's robots to navigate your website. Google sends automated programs called "crawlers" or "spiders" to follow links across your site, reading each page they find. If a page has no internal links pointing to it (an "orphan page"), Google may never find it. If your site has a confusing structure with pages buried 5+ clicks deep from the homepage, Google may not prioritize crawling those pages.
Indexation is about Google deciding to include your page in its search results. Just because Google crawls a page doesn't mean it will index it. You'd use robots.txt to block search engines from crawling admin pages, login pages, internal search results, or staging environments. A common and costly mistake: accidentally blocking your entire website with a robots.txt rule. This happens more often than you'd think, usually when a developer forgets to remove a "Disallow: /" rule that was set up during development.
XML sitemaps are the opposite of robots.txt. Instead of telling Google what to avoid, a sitemap tells Google exactly which pages to crawl and how important they are. It's a file (yoursite.com/sitemap.xml) that lists every page on your site that you want Google to know about.
For most small business websites with 10-50 pages, Google can usually find everything through internal links alone. But a sitemap ensures nothing is missed, and it helps Google discover new pages faster. If you publish a new blog post, your sitemap tells Google immediately rather than waiting for it to discover the page naturally.
Submit your sitemap to Google through Google Search Console. Check it periodically to make sure it doesn't include pages that return errors (404s) or pages you don't want indexed.

HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) encrypts the data sent between your website and your visitor's browser. It's the difference between the padlock icon in the address bar and a "Not Secure" warning.
Google confirmed HTTPS as a ranking signal back in 2014. In 2026, not having HTTPS is like not having a front door on your business. Chrome displays a clear "Not Secure" warning on any HTTP page, which immediately erodes trust and drives visitors away.
If your website still runs on HTTP, fixing this is usually straightforward. Most hosting providers offer free SSL certificates through Let's Encrypt. Install the certificate, set up a redirect from HTTP to HTTPS, and update all internal links to use the HTTPS version. It's one of the highest-impact, lowest-effort technical SEO fixes you can make.
Schema Markup: Helping Google Understand Your Content
Schema markup (also called structured data) is code you add to your website that tells Google specific things about your content in a standardized format. Instead of Google guessing what your page is about by reading the text, schema markup spells it out explicitly.
For a local business, schema markup can tell Google your business name, address, phone number, hours of operation, services, price ranges, review ratings, and more. This information can appear directly in search results as "rich snippets," which makes your listing more prominent and clickable.

Service: Detailed descriptions of individual services you offer, including pricing and availability.

Core Web Vitals: Google's User Experience Metrics
Core Web Vitals are three specific measurements Google uses to evaluate how your website feels to real users. They're a confirmed ranking factor, and Google collects this data from real Chrome users visiting your site.
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): How long it takes for the main content of your page to load. Google wants this under 2.5 seconds. If your hero image, main heading, or primary content block takes longer than that, LCP fails. Fix it by optimizing images, improving server response time, and removing render-blocking resources.
Interaction to Next Paint (INP): How quickly your site responds when a user clicks, taps, or types. Google wants this under 200 milliseconds. If someone taps your menu button and nothing happens for half a second, INP fails. Fix it by reducing JavaScript execution time and breaking up long tasks.
